The physical lifespan of a high-quality solar panel is typically 30 to 40 years, or even more. However, the industry defines a panel’s “useful life” based on its warranty period.
Solar panels do not stop working after the warranty period; however they won’t be replaced by the manufacturer if they fail or begin to under-perform outside of the expected warranted efficiency.
The key to understanding lifespan is knowing the two main manufacturer guarantees:
- Product Warranty (e.g. 30 to 40 years): Covers defects in the physical panel (frame, glass, wiring) due to manufacturing issues.
- Performance Warranty (e.g. 30 to 40 years): Guarantees that the panel will still produce a minimum percentage of its original rated power (usually 88% on a 40-year warranty panel and 92% on a 30-year warranty) at the end of the warranty period.
